Diarrhea comes up often in GLP-1 discussion, sometimes on its own and sometimes alternating with constipation in the same person over a few weeks.
Why it happens
As GLP-1 medications slow overall gastric emptying, they shift your whole digestive rhythm — and that shift doesn't move the same direction for everyone. Some people's systems slow down enough to cause constipation; others experience the opposite, especially in the first weeks on a new dose.
What's reported to help
- Steady hydration — diarrhea depletes fluids and electrolytes faster than most other GI symptoms.
- A slower dose increase if it consistently follows each step up, discussed with your prescriber.
- Simple, low-fat meals in the days it's active, easing back to normal eating as it settles.
When it's more than routine
Diarrhea lasting more than a few days, or with signs of dehydration, is worth flagging to your prescriber. As with vomiting, the fluid and electrolyte loss matters more in the short term than the symptom itself.
